The town was founded as a coal town by James Dunsmuir to house the families of miners, and many of its first buildings were not constructed on site — they were moved here from Extension and Wellington around 1898 and put back together on the hill. Its earliest commercial buildings were wood framed and wood clad with false fronts, and two of them are still standing on First Avenue: 530 dates from about 1900 and 534 from about 1904, both still carrying that cladding. A wall with that much service behind it has open joints and a finish that has been through more than a century of wet winters, which rules out pressure entirely.
